Edison Research has released their annual joint study, with Arbitron, of Americans’ radio consumption habits – and it shows that podcasting continues its steady, unrelenting growth.

According to the report, the audience for podcasts has grown by a healthy 22% since last year.

Information technology research firm Gartner reports that “protail” video – their term for the segment between professionally produced content and user-generated content – is becoming one of the fastest-growing segments of the online video marketplace, and is providing advertisers a safe, targeted inventory in which they can place ads.

While Gartner’s choice of terms may be a bit unfortunate, video created by hardcore amateurs is creating an important new audience for advertisers.

Online Video Audience Has Doubled In One Year

According to a new survey, the number of people watching video streamed through a browser has doubled over the past year, going from 32% a year ago to 63% today.

“Consumers are changing their online habits quickly,” says research director Michael Wolf. “Broadband speeds have continued to increase at the same time that Hollywood has decided online distribution is a legitimate monetization opportunity.”
